A legend tells us of a sculpture patronized by one of the valley kings gave his handsome efforts to make an unique statue of Bhagawati. The image was so remarkable that the king fearing the artist would make a similar image be ordered to chop off the two fingers of the sculptures right hand. The artist who was true devotee of the goddess made another beautiful statue. This time, his entire right hand was chopped off. The artist was not disappointed either and made another image with his left hand. Finally, the king realized his extreme devotion and the artist was asked to finish a fourth statue with his legs. It is presumed that the first of these images is enshrined in the temple of Planchok hill. |

Curse of the stage: Origin of the God- the popular Legend
The temple of God Indreswar Mahadev the protector of the inhabitants of Panauti lies in the centre or the town. There are many more temples and shrines including the one dedicated to Ahiliya, the beautiful wife of Vedic sage Vasidhta.
The legend unfolds, as God Indra once desired beautiful Ahilya, wife of the great sage Vasistha. God indra in disguise of a sage seduced Ahilya. When Vaisstha discovered the matter, he laid a curse on Indra and diversified his whole body into female sexual organs. Thereafter, God Indra with his wife Indrayani came to this confluence to penance performing austerities to Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati. After long years, Parvati took pity on Indraani and transferred her into a river, which joined the river Roshi and Punymata creating the sacred river Triveni. |
|
Shiva pleased with Indra, manifested him in the room of a great Lingam, a phallic stone called Indrewar Mahadev. As Indra bathed at the river side, the sexual organ disappeared from his body. It is believed that the temple of Indreswar Mahdev was built over the Shiva Lingam in 1294 at the beginning of his Malla period. |
